SUNNINGHILL & ASCOT PARISH
Sunninghill Parish Council has a population of c12,000 and was
established in 1894. In 2004, the name of Ascot was included to reflect and identify the area it covers and represents. The
Parish encompasses the villages of Woodside (part), Cheapside, South Ascot, Sunninghill and the larger community of Ascot
and North Ascot. The Parish is steeped in history. Originally consisting mainly of heath and woodland,
historical changes can be observed. The church of St Michael’s and All Angels in Sunninghill is of Saxon origin, Henry
VIII signed his first document as king at Eastmore, (now Sunninghill Park); and The Thatched Tavern, Cheapside, retains some
of its ancient 16th century timbers.

What do Parish Councils do?
Parish
Council is a branch of local government authority with no official connection to the local churches. So,
Parish Councils serve ALL local residents, not just Church goers! Parish Councils look after the Community Halls, Playgrounds and Footpaths and have a very
active involvement in local planning – so when you put in a planning application for your house, the Parish Council
look at it from a local perspective. They have some budgetary controls for the above areas. Parish Councils are the people
friendly interface with local government. Parish Councillors are elected officials from the local area.
